Hugo Community Food Shelf

Hugo Community Food Shelf Update

Thank you to everyone who prayed for a new space for the food shelf. Gene Janicke spotted an available space and we signed a one year lease with Terry Granger of Hugo, Praise God! Our new space is 2,000 sq. feet with an overhead door and space for some mission work opportunities.

Our mission for the new space is to be not only a food shelf but also a “Resource Center”, where we can help those in need to connect with other sources to help them become self-reliant.

Harbors is a non-profit organized in 2006 to provide substantive hope to individuals and families in the St. Croix Valley, in and surrounding the Washington County communities of Hugo and Forest Lake, through programs and services that meet needs. The first program, the Hugo Community Food Shelf, actually began as a an outreach ministry of Hosanna Lutheran Church. When researching ways to serve the community it was discovered that there were families needing what a food shelf could offer. To receive help the families would have to go to Forest Lake or White Bear Lake. It was a need that had gone unmet in that community. When city officials were approached they were very enthused and supportive of Hosanna’s effort to help this population.

The Hugo Community Food Shelf has been very warmly received by the community as well, and has seen a steady increase in community support through volunteers, food donations and financial contributions. The number of families taking advantage of this service also continues to grow. Many volunteers, both from Hosanna and from the community at large bring success to the project.
